Ingredients

  • 4 whole bream (tilapia), cleaned and scaled
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3 tbsp white mealie meal
  • Cooking oil, for frying
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 3 ripe tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 green pepper, sliced
  • 1 lemon

Method

  1. Make two cuts on each side of the fish. Rub with salt and a squeeze of lemon and leave for 10 minutes.
  2. Pat dry and dust lightly with the mealie meal.
  3. Shallow-fry the fish in hot oil for 5 to 7 minutes a side until golden and cooked through. Drain.
  4. In another pan fry the onion and green pepper in a little oil, add the tomatoes and a pinch of salt and cook to a thick relish.
  5. Spoon the relish over the fish and serve with nshima and greens.

Gluten-free check: We dust the fish with mealie meal instead of wheat flour.
