Privacy Policy
Last updated: 29 October 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how Forkwise (“we”, “us”), at forkwiseapp.com, handles information when you use the website and app. Forkwise is run by Tijana Karaleic, Lusaka, Zambia (contact: t.karaleic@gmail.com).
1. Information we collect
You can browse Forkwise without an account. If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you choose to send, and we use it only to reply.
Forkwise Plus members. If you buy Forkwise Plus, the purchase is handled by Paddle.com, our reseller and Merchant of Record. Paddle collects your name, email, billing address/country and payment details (card or PayPal) under its own Privacy Policy; we never receive your card details. Paddle shares with us your email address, country, your Paddle customer and subscription IDs, and your subscription status and renewal dates, so we can manage your subscription and help you with access to Plus.
Access to Plus and member sign-in. To use Plus on your devices you sign in with the email address you used at checkout. We email you a one-time code and sign-in link (sent by our email provider, Resend). Our member service, which runs on Cloudflare Workers with a Cloudflare D1 database, keeps your email address, your Paddle customer and subscription IDs and status, and short-lived sign-in records (a hashed code and how many tries, deleted after 15 minutes). It also stores the Plus data you choose to sync between your devices while signed in: your meal plans and ticks, planner settings, label-scanner history (text and results, no photos), saved recipes and shopping list. Your browser keeps a sign-in token for 30 days and a random device ID used only to finish sign-in right after you pay. We use this only to give you Plus on your devices; our legal basis is performing our contract with you. Signing out removes the token from that device; you can ask us to delete your synced data at any time.
Messages to Tijana (Plus). If you message Tijana as a Plus member, we receive your email address and whatever you write. That may include information about your health, diet or food intolerances if you choose to share it. We ask for your explicit consent before you send a message, we use it only to reply to you and support you, we never use it for advertising, and we do not share it with anyone except our email provider (Google Gmail), which stores and delivers our email. Please only share what you are comfortable with, and you can ask us to delete your messages at any time.
Recipes you share. If you send us a recipe, we receive your email address, the name you want credited and the recipe. We use them to review the recipe, publish it with credit to you if it is chosen, and add your Forkwise Plus reward. If your recipe is not published, we delete your email within 12 months.
Blog email updates (MailerLite). If you sign up for new blog posts by email, we collect your email address and keep it with our newsletter provider, MailerLite (MailerLite UAB, EU), in our “Blog subscribers” list. We only use it to email you new posts from the Forkwise blog. You confirm your sign-up through a link we email you (double opt-in). You can unsubscribe any time with the link in every email, or by emailing us, and your address is then removed from the list. Our legal basis is your consent.
Data stored on your device. Forkwise saves your favourites, ratings, shopping list, meal plans, your own added recipes and your settings in your browser’s localStorage, and keeps an offline copy of the app in your browser’s cache through a service worker. This data stays on your device. We cannot see it, and it is not sent to us. You can delete it at any time by clearing this site’s data in your browser settings.
Server logs. Like most websites, our hosting provider may automatically record technical information such as your IP address, browser type, the pages requested and the time of the request, for security and to keep the service running.
2. Cookies
Cookies are small text files stored by your browser. Forkwise itself does not need cookies to work. Third-party services described below, especially advertising partners, may set cookies or use similar technologies (such as device identifiers, pixels or localStorage) when you visit.
3. Advertising: Google AdSense and third-party cookies
We use, or may use, Google AdSense to show ads on Forkwise.
- Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your previous visits to this website or other websites.
- Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and/or other sites on the Internet.
- You may opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google’s Ads Settings (also available as My Ad Center). You can also opt out of some third-party vendors’ use of cookies for personalised advertising at www.aboutads.info/choices or, in Europe, www.youronlinechoices.eu.
- Other third-party vendors or ad networks may also serve ads on this site. Where they do, they may use cookies, web beacons or similar technologies to measure and personalise ads.
Learn more in How Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services, how Google uses cookies in advertising and the Google Privacy Policy.
Where the law requires it (for example for visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland), we will ask for your consent through a consent message before personalised ads or non-essential cookies are used, and you can change your choice at any time. If you do not consent, Google may still show non-personalised ads, which use cookies only for purposes such as frequency capping, fraud prevention and aggregated reporting.
4. Other third-party services
- Google Fonts supplies the site’s typefaces. Your browser connects to Google’s servers, which receive your IP address.
- Images are loaded from Wikimedia Commons, TheMealDB and TheCocktailDB, which receive your IP address and browser information when you view them.
- Videos are embedded from YouTube in privacy-enhanced (youtube-nocookie.com) mode. YouTube may set cookies or store data once you play a video. See the Google Privacy Policy.
- Paddle.com (Merchant of Record) runs the checkout, payments, tax, receipts, refunds and the subscription management page. Its checkout loads from Paddle’s servers when you open it.
- Cloudflare (Cloudflare, Inc.) runs our member service (Workers and D1 database) that checks your membership with Paddle and syncs your Plus data. See the Cloudflare Privacy Policy.
- Resend (Plus Five Five, Inc.) sends sign-in code emails. It receives your email address and the email it delivers. See the Resend Privacy Policy.
- MailerLite sends our blog emails to people who sign up. It stores your email address and sign-up details and records whether emails are opened. See the MailerLite Privacy Policy.
- What can I cook? (Forkwise Plus, 2 free searches). The ingredients you type are matched against our recipes on your device and are not sent to us or anyone else. Your last ingredients, your free-search count and the searches already counted are kept only in your browser’s local storage on this device; clearing your browser data deletes them. Items you add to your shopping list are stored like the rest of your list.
- Barcode & label scanner (Forkwise Plus, 3 free scans). When you scan a barcode, your camera picture is read on your device (by your browser’s built-in barcode detector, or by the ZBar reader that loads from this site) – no video or photos are recorded or uploaded. Only the barcode number is sent to Open Food Facts, and the product photo is loaded from Open Food Facts’ image server. The camera turns off as soon as a barcode is read or you leave the scanner. Label photos are read on your device by the open-source Tesseract.js text reader and are never uploaded to us or anyone else. The reader’s program and language files are downloaded from the jsDelivr CDN the first time you scan a photo (jsDelivr receives your IP address, like any website you load). If you look up a barcode, only the barcode number is sent to Open Food Facts (see its privacy policy). Your free-scan count and, for Plus members, your scan history (the text and result, no photos) are kept in your browser’s local storage; if you sign in, your scan history is also synced to your member account so it appears on your other devices (see member sign-in). You can delete it in the scan history.
- Links to recipe sources take you to other websites with their own privacy policies.
5. How we use information
We use information to run, secure and improve Forkwise, to provide and manage Forkwise Plus memberships, to reply to your messages, and, where advertising is enabled, to show ads that help keep Forkwise free. We do not sell your personal information for money.
6. Your rights under GDPR (EEA, UK and Switzerland)
If you are in the EEA, the UK or Switzerland, you have the right to access, correct or delete your personal data, to restrict or object to its processing, to data portability, and to withdraw consent at any time. Our legal bases are performance of a contract (providing Forkwise Plus), your consent (personalised ads and non-essential cookies), your explicit consent (any health information you choose to include in a message to Tijana) and our legitimate interests (running and securing the site, and replying to messages). You can complain to your local data protection authority. To exercise your rights, email t.karaleic@gmail.com.
7. Your rights under CCPA/CPRA (California)
California residents have the right to know what personal information is collected and how it is used and shared, to delete it, to correct it, to opt out of the “sale” or “sharing” of personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising, and to limit the use of sensitive personal information. Exercising these rights will not lead to discrimination. Ad cookies set by Google and other partners may count as “sharing” under California law. You can opt out through Google Ads Settings, by turning on a Global Privacy Control signal in your browser, or by emailing us with the subject “Do Not Sell or Share”. In the last 12 months, the categories that may have been collected through the site are internet or network activity (such as cookies, IP address and pages viewed) and approximate location derived from your IP address.
8. Zambia and other countries
We also respect the Data Protection Act, 2021 of Zambia and similar laws elsewhere. Third-party providers such as Google may process data in other countries, including the United States, under their own safeguards.
9. Children
Forkwise is a general-audience site and is not directed at children under 13 (or under 16 in the EEA). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
10. Data retention and security
Emails are kept only as long as needed to answer you and for our records. Messages to Tijana are kept for up to 12 months after your last message, unless you ask us to delete them sooner. Member records (email, Paddle IDs, subscription status and your synced Plus data) are kept while you are a member and for up to 24 months afterwards so we can help you with access and for our accounting; you can ask us to delete them sooner, except where we must keep records by law. Data in your browser stays until you delete it. We use HTTPS across the site.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy, for example when we enable new services. The date at the top shows the latest version.
