How we check recipes
Every recipe gluten-free, checked ingredient by ingredient.
Forkwise only lists recipes made from ingredients that are gluten-free by nature. We read every ingredient line of every recipe, and the method, before a recipe is listed. When we are not sure about an ingredient, the recipe goes out.
What we keep
- Foods that are naturally gluten-free: fresh meat, fish, eggs, dairy, vegetables, fruit, pulses, nuts and seeds, rice, maize/corn, potatoes, buckwheat and similar.
- Single, plain ingredients such as plain spices, oils, sugar, honey, maple syrup, wine and wine or cider vinegar, and baking powder.
- Distilled spirits in cocktails (18+ only), see cocktails and alcohol.
What we take out
A recipe is removed if it uses wheat, barley, rye, spelt or regular oats, or an ingredient that often contains gluten or that we cannot check, for example:
- bread, pasta, flour, couscous, beer and malt (including malt vinegar)
- stock cubes, soy and other bottled sauces, ketchup, prepared mustard, curry pastes and spice blends
- sausages, bacon and other processed or cured meats
- shop-bought sweets, meringues, cordials, flavoured syrups, branded mixes and sodas
- “serve with bread or toast”, or ingredient lists we could not read clearly
In this review we removed 139 recipes that looked gluten-free at first but had a doubtful ingredient, on top of every recipe with a gluten ingredient.
Cocktails and alcohol
Most Forkwise drinks are alcohol-free. Cocktails are marked “🔞 18+ Contains alcohol”, kept in their own Cocktails (18+) section and left out of the alcohol-free drinks, dairy-free drinks and Five & Fast lists. They use distilled spirits (such as vodka, gin, rum, tequila and whisky), which are gluten-free; we leave out beer, ale, lager and malt drinks. Check the label of liqueurs and flavoured spirits, and please drink responsibly.
Egg-free and dairy-free
These labels are strict too: if a recipe might contain egg or dairy (for example butter, cheese, milk, cream, yoghurt or mayonnaise), it is not labelled egg-free or dairy-free.
What we don’t do
We do not test-cook recipes in a certified kitchen or lab-test them. A recipe being on Forkwise is not a medical or safety guarantee.
If you have coeliac disease
- Check the label of every product you buy, even ones that are usually gluten-free (spices, rice, oats, chocolate, cornflour, yoghurt), and choose products labelled gluten-free where you can.
- Avoid cross-contact in your own kitchen: use clean boards, pans, colanders, toasters and oil, and keep gluten-free ingredients away from flour and crumbs.
- Talk to your doctor or a registered dietitian about your own diet.
