About Forkwise
Founder
Hi, I’m Tijana Karaleic, founder of Forkwise
I was born in Serbia and grew up in Zambia, where I still live today, in Lusaka. Two very different food cultures shaped how I cook. One is full of slow-cooked stews and fresh produce, the other built on nshima, beans and greens, and I’ve learned to love both.
Living with chronic pain
For many years I have lived with slipped discs in my neck (C4–C6) and lower back (L5–S1). They brought chronic pain and inflammation into my everyday life, and taught me to pay close attention to everything that affects how I feel, including what I eat.
Learning to eat differently
At 21 I discovered I was gluten intolerant. By my thirties, eggs and dairy had joined the list. Every meal meant reading labels, asking questions and often going without. Over time, through trial and error in my own kitchen, I found a way of eating that works for me. It helps me keep inflammation down and manage my back pain. This is my personal experience, not medical advice, and everyone’s body is different.
Why I built Forkwise
I wanted one trustworthy place where every recipe is gluten-free, and where it’s easy to find dishes without egg or dairy, without second-guessing every ingredient. Every recipe on Forkwise is checked ingredient by ingredient, and anything doubtful is left out.
My promise to you
Recipes marked “✓ Tijana’s tried it” are ones I cook and trust myself. My own Forkwise originals are ⭐ Star recipes for Plus members. As a Plus member, you can message me directly for support and tips from my own experience, and I’ll reply within 24 hours.

Every recipe gluten-free
Every recipe gluten-free, checked ingredient by ingredient. We read every ingredient and method and remove any recipe with an ingredient we are not sure about. We do not test-cook or lab-test recipes, so if you have coeliac disease, check product labels and avoid cross-contact in your own kitchen. Read how we check recipes.
Where the recipes come from
Recipes are collected from open and public-domain sources and rewritten into one consistent format: the Wikibooks Cookbook (CC BY-SA 4.0), U.S. government sources such as USDA MyPlate Kitchen, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (public-domain U.S. government works), public-domain cookbooks from Project Gutenberg, TheMealDB and TheCocktailDB (alcohol-free drinks only). Only recipes that pass our gluten-free check are listed. Each recipe page names its source, licence and photo credit. The full list is on the credits page.
Photos and videos
Photos are openly licensed (mostly from Wikimedia Commons) or provided by the recipe source, and each one is credited. Recipes without a matching open photo show an illustrated placeholder. Videos are embedded from YouTube only when the recipe source itself links to them.
